Long

The term “Long” or “Long Position”, refers to an extended position in a security. This means that the trader owns the security. Investors aim at maintaining a “Long” security position when he or she expects that the stock will eventually see an increase in its intrinsic value.

Naturally, the opposite of a “Long” position is a “Short” position.

The term “Long” may also be affixed to the term “trades” to refer to a trade wherein a day trader had bought an asset and is waiting to sell it once the price goes up. The terms, ‘buy” and “long” are used interchangeably by Day Traders. When traders say that they will “go long”, this indicates their interest in buying a particular asset.
